Here's what you need to know before your first surf lesson:
Before you dive in, let's set some expectations. You probably won't be sprinting into the sea with sun-kissed hair flowing behind you as your perfectly toned body leaps onto the board. We're good, but even we're not that good. You're more likely to have your hair plastered to your face, be wearing a wetsuit, and be trying to manage a large foam board while the wind does its best to knock it out of your hands. Despite this, you're going to have a lot of fun, experience some adrenaline highs, and feel a great sense of achievement when you catch your first wave.
1. IT'S HARDER THAN IT LOOKS!
Surfing might look effortless when you watch experienced surfers gliding gracefully over the waves, but don't be fooled – learning to surf is much harder than it appears. It's a challenging sport that requires a combination of physical strength, balance, coordination, and mental fortitude.
Firstly, there's the ocean itself. Unlike a controlled environment such as a swimming pool or a football field, the sea is constantly changing and unpredictable. You have to learn to read the waves, understand the currents, and anticipate the ocean's movements, which can take years of experience.
Then, there's the physical aspect. Surfing is a full-body workout that demands strong paddling skills, the ability to pop up quickly and smoothly, and maintaining balance on an unstable surface. Your arms, shoulders, and back will be working hard to paddle out and catch waves, while your core and legs will be engaged in keeping you balanced on the board. Many beginners are surprised at how exhausting a few hours in the water can be. Understanding common challenges beforehand helps—learn more in our guide: Discover 3 of the Worst Mistakes All Beginner Surfers Make.
2. IT'S A MIX OF TIME ON THE SAND & IN THE WATER
This might not be immediately obvious, but it's essential. Learning the basic surf movements on land is much easier than in the water. Your instructor will demonstrate how to pop up on the board, paddle, and other necessary movements on the sand before you try them in the sea. The more you practise on the sand, the better you can focus on riding the waves.
Land-based practice is also an excellent time to ask your instructor any questions. They'll provide basic safety instructions and specific information about the day's swell, weather, and the best spots to catch waves. Our group surf lessons in Cornwall dedicate significant time to this land-based practice, ensuring you develop proper form before entering the water.
3. YOU'RE GOING TO WIPE OUT
Wiping out is inevitable – unless you plan to spend your lesson floating on your board topping up your tan in the Cornish sun. It's part of the experience, and you might be surprised by how much fun it can be.
4. YOU MIGHT NOT STAND UP
Or you might. But it's not uncommon for your first lesson to involve mostly learning to pop up on your board, kneeling, and definitely falling. Regardless of how far you get, remember that it's just the beginning. With practice, you'll improve. Trust us, there's no better feeling than catching a wave, and once you do, you won't want to stop.

5. YOU MIGHT BE A BIT SORE THE NEXT DAY
Surfing is a full-body workout, so your body might feel it the next day. The most noticeable soreness might be in your hip bones, as they take a bit of a beating from the board at first. But don't worry – the more you practise, the easier it gets.
6. (ONE MORE BECAUSE IT'S IMPORTANT) – IT'S FUN!
Our qualified instructors will ensure your surf lesson is as enjoyable as possible. We'll do exercises, spend plenty of time practising in the waves, and give you tips on how to improve on your own. Many students love it so much that they hire a board and wetsuit after the lesson – which we offer for just £10 more.
We also offer private lessons, couples' surfing lessons, and surf safari trips. For more information check out our surf lessons page. For those seeking immersive learning experiences, our surf camps in Cornwall provide daily coaching that dramatically accelerates your progression beyond what single lessons can achieve.
CONSIDER TAKING AN ONLINE SURF COURSE
You might wonder why you should take an online surf course if you're going to have an in-person lesson. An in-person surf lesson typically lasts 2-3 hours, which is enough time to enjoy yourself and get a feel for surfing, but not enough to learn everything you need to know.
An online surf course teaches you essential topics including safety, surf equipment, surfboard handling, paddling theory, pop-up theory, ocean dynamics, catching waves, and even the history of surfing. Better yet, explore our comprehensive Beginner's Guide to Surfing, which covers everything from understanding conditions to mastering turns—your complete resource for becoming a confident surfer.
